New York, 1939. A young waitress named Catherine gives birth to a baby she names Jean. Baby Jean has red hair, blue eyes, and despite being born into a tough situation, she also has a date with destiny. Catherine quickly realizes that she can't take care of her newborn baby – not the way she wants to, living off paltry tips. But in that desperate situation, she finds hope. She comes to believe she may have just discovered a path out of poverty, a better life for her daughter, and maybe even a way to give her baby eternal life. Fantasy? Of course it is. But that doesn't mean she didn't believe it. Humankind has a long history of looking for a way to cheat death.
