A city where life and death collide in ways I’m still searching for words to describe...
It's been a long time since I've been somewhere as complex, confronting and utterly confounding as Varanasi.
While death is on full display, I found no shortage of kindness and joy in the eyes of holy men and those who have come to bathe in the sacred waters of the Ganges.
Thousands of pilgrims travel to Varanasi, considered India's holiest city, to die. It is believed that those who are cremated here attain moksha or liberation from the cycle of rebirth.
Witnessing everything from deep mourning to colorful rituals and even port-mortem cannibalism in a single afternoon caused a whirlwind of emotions that I’m grateful to have had the opportunity to feel.
