In this video from the Berklee Online course Berklee Keyboard Method, instructor Rebecca Cline teaches you how to build triad inversions on the piano. Triads tend to have three different inversions: root position, first inversion, and second inversion. Cline explains that a triad is in root position when the root of the chord is the lowest note, with the 3rd above it and the 5th on top. To play the triad in first inversion, move the root up an octave, making the 3rd the lowest note and the 5th the middle note. For the second inversion, move the 3rd up an octave as well, leaving the 5th as the lowest note with the root in the middle. Cline advises you to practice inversions moving up and down as well as always holding the keys down to memorize them. In order to spot root position triads in music notation, notice if the space between notes is line-to-line or space-to-space. The first inversion has a greater gap between the top two notes and in the second inversion the gap is on the bottom.
