In this video from the Berklee Online AI for Songwriters course, instructor Ben Camp explains the concept of “style transfer” inside the audio field. Style transferring refers to taking existing content and transforming it into the style of another, creating output that’s brand new, like rendering a photo from your phone in the style of a famous impressionist painter. The same idea can be applied to audio once you combine the content of one voice with the style of another. When it comes to artificial intelligence, this is known as the RVS (Retrieval-Based Voice Conversion), which means breaking one voice into four different traits (phonemes, pitch, volume, and timbre). To convert one form of voice into another, it is necessary to submit a source of audio into a converter that is meant to change the input voice and add the stylistic traits of another voice, keeping the pitch and timing of your voice, but changing timbre, accent, and breathiness. Camp explains how this is used to transform your performance into the voice of another artist. This practice has been used to revive lost performances, create unique collaborations, and push musical boundaries, transforming audio production in multiple ways. However, it is important to acknowledge the ethical responsibilities that come along with doing this practice, such as creator consent, transparency, and fair representation.
