Although Taiwan is overwhelmingly Chinese-speaking today, its recorded history is one of constant colonization, from the Dutch East India Company to the Qing Dynasty. ?? Against all odds, Taiwan's ancient aboriginal populations survive, numbering around 550,000. Once dominant, they are now concentrated in the inaccessible mountainous east.
