In this video from Wellness for Artists: Music, Movement, and Mindfulness, a Berklee Online course written by Jennifer Caraluzzi, guest speaker Marcela Castillo-Rama—a wellness expert and Berklee Online instructor—teaches you how to eat healthfully on a small budget. First, she explains that you should choose whole foods instead of processed foods because they are more dense in nutrients. Foods like potatoes, eggs, and vegetables are able to keep us full for longer and cost less than processed foods. Castillo-Rama also explains the importance of shopping strategically, meaning buying in-season foods, looking at nutritional information on every product, and buying from local farmers’ markets. These habits are not only beneficial for gut health, she says, but they could also help you save money. Additionally, Castillo-Rama says that planning meals in advance and cooking at home is also less costly, and it will prevent you from making impulse buys while at the store, and empower you to know all of the ingredients that you are putting into your body.
