Operating System Functions 6: File Management
This is the sixth of six short computer science lessons about the functions of an operating system. In this lesson you will learn about secondary storage management. It covers the operating system’s role in providing access to secondary storage devices such as magnetic hard drives, solid state drives and optical drives. From the user’s perspective, data files can be organised intuitively in a hierarchical folder system, rather like working with a paper-based filing system. A file explorer application allows the computer user to easily copy, move, rename and delete files and folders. It also allows the user to view detailed information about files and folders and fine tune other users’ access to them.
