Throughout history, political borders haven’t always matched the way people or communities chose to organize themselves. This has given rise to “micro-countries” — tiny sovereign states or self-declared micronations that exist entirely within the borders of larger, more powerful countries. Some of these are officially recognized, like Vatican City inside Italy, while others are small, quirky entities that claim independence but lack international recognition. Together, they reveal how geography, history, and human determination can carve out miniature nations in the shadow of much larger ones.
