Recovering Treasures From an Abandoned German Homestead, Deep in the Canadian Woods. Lot 32
Last year, I got the chance to chase a neat lead, to find an old German homestead that had been abandoned decades ago. I am in a very fortunate position, where I get a lot of leads from a lot of different people in a lot of different places, but it is not as common to get a good lead this close to home. One of the local ranch owners told me of this location, and was kind enough to give me some pretty decent directions as well.
Setting out last year to find it, I think luck was probably my greatest help with this one, because it was practically a miracle that I managed to take all of the right turns once on foot. Never the less, I did find it, and I was delighted to see what was left. When the property was abandoned, the owners took nearly everything with them, but but the construction of the home its self, and the items within were a treat all their own.
Every old homestead was heated with a fireplace, and I have been lucky to see many different kinds over they years, but I have only once before seen a chimney of stone, and never before had I seen one of brick. The more modern homestead has an incredible brick chimney, that is remarkable still intact today. It is not impressive compared to conventional brick chimneys, it is impressive because of the bricks themselves. These bricks are hand packed from local clay somewhere nearby, and cemented into place with another kind of clay. I am so thankful I had the opportunity to see it still standing, because it is starting to look like the end is near. In fact, the whole property is starting to show some serious signs of deterioration.
The treasure we are on the hunt for today is in the oldest building, which I believe to be the original homestead. There is an old doorknob and latch mechanism in that old cabin, and I think it would be so neat to refurbish it and put it to use again in Lot 32. The door its self would have been a bonus as well, but unfortunately the condition was just a little too bad. Never the less, our mission was a huge success, I got to share some history and a great adventure with one of my favourite people, and we came home with a relic for the lot.
