Cheap and Easy Off Grid Water System. Stackable IBC Totes at Lot 32
I am sure this system will see some changes and improvements as time goes on, but for a first run I think this is going to work quite well. I decided to use IBC totes for my water storage because they are cheap, they are food grade and they take up very little space when stacked.
Growing up, our family had a dry well, so my Father had to truck water. I am sure this was an inconvenience for him, but to me it just seemed normal, so it was an easy decision for my own off grid water storage. For the past five years, I have been living and traveling in either the Motorhome or the Rig, and water has always been limited. The Rig has enough water to last us a week, if we are on a shower schedule, so going up to 2000 litres should be a big improvement. For the typical household, this would not be enough, but for me it should do just fine.
Sitting side by side, these tanks are very easy to use because you can simply just attach an air vent to the top, or even take the lid off to fill them. Once stacked, they become more challenging because the air must be vented from the bottom tank as it fills, but also must be water/air tight because it will be under pressure with the tank above it also full. You might think that 1000 litres would create a lot of pressure, but it is actually quite minimal, but still needs to be contained.
