Kings and Generals animated historical documentary series on modern warfare the Great War and the Ottoman history continues with an episode on the Sarikamish Campaign of World War, as the Ottomans suffer the greatest military catastrophe in their history. Previously we covered the Rise of the Ottoman Empire from the humble beginnings as a small Turkic Beylik to the Fall of Constantinople 1453 covering all the major battles including (https://youtu.be/TDLmsiqhgns) and the reign of Mehmet II (https://youtu.be/TbqMBfxtOTI). By the outbreak of the First World War, the Ottoman Empire stood at the edge of collapse. Decades of military defeat, economic dependency, and territorial loss had reduced the once-dominant empire to what European powers derisively called the “Sick Man of Europe.” This video explores how the Ottomans entered the Great War and traces their first, desperate campaigns across multiple fronts in 1914. We begin by examining the empire’s dire financial and industrial condition, the geopolitical pressures bearing down on Istanbul, and the failed attempts to secure protection from Britain and France. Forced into a fateful partnership with Germany, the Young Turk leadership gambled that war might reverse Ottoman decline. That gamble quickly escalated with the dramatic Goeben and Breslau incident and the Ottoman Black Sea raid, drawing the empire into open conflict with Russia, Britain, and France. The narrative then follows the opening battles of the war: the brutal fighting in the Caucasus during the Bergmann Offensive, Britain’s swift seizure of Basra in Mesopotamia, and the short-lived Ottoman move against Cheikh Said in the Red Sea. The episode culminates in the catastrophic Battle of Sarikamish, where Enver Pasha’s winter offensive ended in disaster, costing the Ottomans tens of thousands of men and setting the tone for a tragic war to come.
