The sculptress who framed Lady Jane Grey and the flood that nearly destroyed her | National Gallery
Who was Félicie de Fauveau? And how was she involved in the design of a frame for this huge painting?
Paul Delaroche's painting The Execution of Lady Jane Grey has quite a following. The dramatic, almost theatrical image shows the young queen moments from death. The painting itself has quite a few stories to tell, not least that of the rebellious woman sculptor, Félicie de Fauveau (1801‒1886) whose imagination produced an earlier magnificent frame, segments of which we can still see today.
Go behind the scenes and see another side of the painting with Isabella Kocum, Frame Conservator and admirer of de Fauveau's work, as she shows us sections of the original frame and introduces us to this talented artist – sometimes referred to today as 'the Amazon sculptress'.
