Systems Software
This computer science lesson is about systems software. You will learn about the main functions of an operating system including the provision of a user interface, memory management, multitasking, device management, user management and security, and file management. The lesson begins by making a distinction between application software and systems software. It then goes on to discuss the purpose and functions of an operating system in some detail. This includes a comparison of graphical user interfaces (GUI) and command line interfaces (CLI), as well as mentioning of some more modern user interfaces such as AI enabled voice control, gestural control and brain computer interfaces. You will learn about functions of the operating system kernel such as memory management, including the use of swap space to supplement the RAM with virtual memory, and multitasking, by means of round robin process scheduling. The role of special programs known as device drivers which manage input and output operations and provide a bridge between a computer’s hardware and the operating system is also covered. In addition, you will learn about user management and security, including the benefits of having multiple user profiles on a single computer and the workings of roaming user profiles on a computer network. Finally, the lesson covers the operating system’s role in secondary storage management by providing file and folder operations such as copy, move, rename and delete, and the ability to fine tune a user’s access to shared programs and data.
