Ceph is OUT! MinIO & Longhorn – The Future?
“In my last video, I explained why I’m moving away from Ceph, largely due to IBM’s Bluewashing of Red Hat and Ceph. So what’s next? I’m exploring MinIO and Longhorn—two modern storage solutions with different approaches:
• MinIO is a lightweight, high-performance object storage system, compatible with many filesystems and easy to deploy.
• Longhorn is a distributed block storage system designed for Kubernetes, offering resilience and replication.
But beyond just choosing a storage platform, there’s a bigger issue—how long will our digital records survive?
I have data from 30 years ago that I can no longer retrieve because the storage media and hardware are obsolete. If this is already happening, what does it mean for the data we’re creating today?
This video is an introduction to MinIO & Longhorn, along with a discussion on the fragility of digital storage. I’ll be doing a full performance comparison in a future video—so stay tuned!
