Who is peering out at us from this silver shawl? | National Gallery
Savoldo's mysterious Mary Magdalene stands out from other paintings of her in the National Gallery's collection. It's markedly different, so how can we be sure it is a painting of her?
Giovanni Savoldo was an Italian artist from Brescia but is known mostly for works he painted in Venice. He, like other Brescian artists, was interested in the effects of light and shade, of shadow and metallic colours.
Join Siobhan as she introduces us to Savoldo and lifts the veil on the various clues to the subject's identity. Mary Magdalene was present at Christ's crucifixion and burial and visited his tomb on Easter morning to anoint his body but found the tomb empty.
