Should Australia move to a four-day working week? | Close of Business
Australia's peak body for trade unions, the ACTU, is calling for a four-day work week to lift economic output and living standards ahead of next week's Economic Reform Roundtable. The Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has dismissed the idea, saying the government is not working on any such plans. The ACTU joins the Australian Manufacturing Workers Union and the Australian Nursing and Midwifery Federation, who are also calling for a shorter working week. Economist and lecturer at Deakin University Nataliya Ilyushina thinks focusing on working hours is the wrong approach. She says "when we are in a productivity crisis, experimenting with a four-day working week, no matter how exciting, this proposition is a really risky proposition and it's not a good time for that." Another factor that impacts productivity is chronic illness, researchers are counting the exact cost to business. This week also showed the jobs market is still resilient with the unemployment rate ticking down despite mass layoffs from tech and banking firms as they invest in artificial intelligence. We hear from one worker, who lost her job at LinkedIn after working there for seven years. LinkedIn's parent company Microsoft is shedding thousands of jobs globally. Plus, the S&P/ASX 200 touches a fresh record and the RBA cuts interest rates for the third time this year. Many economists expect the Reserve Bank to move again in November. Close of Business is presented by Alicia Barry.
