JUST IN: The Orion crew module and service module have officially separated, revealing the spacecraft’s heat shield.

The heat shield is on the underside of the spacecraft, where it will protect the crew upon entry into Earth's atmosphere.

That shield will withstand temperatures of up to 5,000 degrees Fahrenheit during the high-speed entry.
