In this video Jazzduets demonstrates some of Practice Focus Points below using as raw material the John Coltrane Pentatonic.
These are different ideas to focus on whilst practicing something.
The idea over time is to assimilate these to a point where they are second nature.
PRACTICE FOCUS POINTS:
1. FOCUS - on the notes themselves .
2. Fingers - are my fingers as close as they can be to the keys?
3. Breathing - Inhalation - Am I really filling my lungs ?
4. Air stream. Is it backed up - and constant?
5.a Embouchure - is it comfortable? is my lower lip soft?
5.b. double embouchure.
6. Tongue - Feel where is it? High or low etc?
7. Face - smiling focus.
8. Am I relaxed? - In my body and mind?
9. Articulation - with and without
10. Tuning - listen for beats
11. My sound - is it even—how is it blending?
12. Swing or straight - feel
13. Vibrato - try out different vibratos
14. Dynamics - push the limits
15. Throat - is it open or tense and constricted?
