The Qoorchilar: The Elite Turkoman Bodyguards of the Safavids

The Qoorchilar ('Archers') were the elite military and political force of the Safavid Empire. ? Founded by Ismail I and greatly expanded by Abbas I (to ~12,000 men), they were recruited from Turkoman nomadic tribes. Fully supported by the Shah, they served as his personal guard and were led by the Qoorchi-Bashi.
