Discuss the social and cultural climate that inspired Dutch artists of the 19th century, as well as their complex relationship to art of the past. Although they had a deep veneration for earlier figures such as Rembrandt, they were also firmly committed to a more modern approach that paved the way for a figure like Van Gogh.
