In this video from the Berklee Online course, Music Production 101, instructor Michael Bierylo teaches you how different types of audio interfaces work in order to transmit audio into a computer. Bierylo, who wrote this course with David Mash, explains how a basic interface consists of one microphone input and an option to turn phantom power on and off, which is used when recording with a condenser microphone. Additionally, audio interfaces also have a line input commonly used for plugging in guitars, a knob to control levels, and a headphone output. On the back of the interface, you will often find a USB connector and two RCA outputs, the latter of which are less commonly seen in interfaces. The second model Bierylo introduces contains some additional elements such as two microphone inputs, one of them containing a neutrik connector that takes the XLR connector from different types of microphone cables. For these inputs, there is a level control knob, a 48-volt phantom power, and other additional controls that moderate headphones or speaker’s output. On the back panel of this second interface, Bieylo explains how there are several inputs and outputs that can be connected to monitor speakers and instruments. Additionally, this model contains “Standard MIDI Connections,” which allows the interface to serve as a MIDI interface as well. For more professional features, other interfaces have more input and output options, consisting of six different analog inputs and outputs, which allow you to connect multiple devices at the same time.

Michael Bierylo is an electronic musician, guitarist, composer, and sound designer. He has been a faculty member at Berklee College of Music since 1995 and is currently Chair of the Electronic Production and Design department, where he led the development of Berklee’s Electronic Digital Instrument program, the Electronic Performance Minor, and the Creative Coding Minor. Major projects include artist residencies with Suzanne Ciani, Nona Hendryx, Hank Shocklee, Richard Devine, Chagall, Robert Rich, and Kaitlyn Aurelia Smith. With Berklee Online, he has written and teaches music production and music technology courses.

David Mash is a guitarist, composer, producer, synthesist, author, educator, and futurist. He retired in 2017 as Senior Vice President for Innovation, Strategy, and Technology at Berklee College of Music in Boston, where he had worked for more than 40 years. David was the founding chair of Berklee’s Music Synthesis department (now known as Electronic Production and Design).
