Siege Warfare: The Three Key Elements of Capturing a Fortress
Siege Warfare is the complex art of capturing a fortified strongpoint. It often uses three key elements: Investment (surrounding the target to cut off all supplies and communications), Contravallation (building an inner line of fortifications facing the besieged to prevent sorties), and Circumvallation (building an outer line of fortifications facing away from the target to defend against external relief forces). The most famous example of all three tactics was Julius Caesar's successful Siege of Alesia in 52 BC. #SiegeWarfare #MilitaryHistory #HistoryShorts #Craig #AncientWarfare #JuliusCaesar #SiegeOfAlesia #Investment #Contravallation #Circumvallation #MilitaryStrategy #HistoricalTactics #Fortifications #WarHistory
