On Monday, Australia signed a historic defence treaty with Papua New Guinea. In the event of an armed attack on either, it commits both countries to meet the "common danger."
The Pukpuk treaty is based on the same idea which underpins Australia's only other formal alliance, the ANZUS treaty with the United States and New Zealand.
