Kings and Generals animated historical documentary series on Modern Affairs continues with a video on the Middle East and why so many wars happen there. Why does the Middle East see so many wars – and is it really more violent than the rest of the world? Beginning with the 2023–24 war in Gaza, this video looks beyond headlines to explain the deeper, recurring causes of conflict across the region. We start by examining the idea of “Middle East exceptionalism” and compare the region’s wars with conflict data from the rest of the world. From there, we explore how the Israeli–Palestinian question became a central flashpoint, shaping Arab–Israeli wars, proxy conflicts, and regional alignments. We then turn to the long and complicated rivalry between Iran and the United States, and how it fuels proxy wars from Lebanon and Syria to Iraq and the Red Sea. The role of oil as both lifeline and curse is analyzed through the Iran–Iraq War, the invasion of Kuwait, and the 2003 Iraq War. Finally, we look at sectarian and ethnic divisions, Kurdish struggles, poor governance, and the unintended consequences of the Arab Spring. Rather than blaming a single cause, this video shows how foreign intervention, identity, resources, and authoritarian rule interact to produce persistent instability in the modern Middle East.
