Google’s “Friend Rescue” for Accounts?!
Google is introducing new account-recovery tools: Recovery Contacts (trusted friends/family can help verify you) and Sign-in with Mobile Number (Android detects your account and uses your previous device’s lock-screen passcode instead of a password). Google hasn’t shared full technical details yet, but says the rollout is gradual and part of broader protections, including Google Messages spam-link warnings and Key Verify to spot impersonators. In this video we explain how these features are meant to work, where to find them (eligible personal accounts → Security), who benefits (helping parents or grandparents), and the potential risks. Good idea, or new attack surface?
