Taking the Pain Out of Engine Upgrades | Unreal Fest Orlando 2025
In this session recorded at Unreal Fest Orlando 2025, Keith Judge of Tanglewood Games presents techniques for smoothing out the process of upgrading Unreal Engine and avoiding common pitfalls—even for teams that have made engine modifications.
The talk aims to inform on how to structure your engine modifications in a way that assists with upgrades, and makes the process less daunting.
Topics include how to make your engine modifications merge-friendly, easily togglable, and testable during merging; branching/merging setup; automating as much of the merging/resolving as possible (with Robomerge and other tools); updating modules/plugins that have been moved (e.g. from Experimental to Production); third-party plugins; dealing with deprecation warnings; integrating cherry-picked changes from Epic; and using commandlets to resave assets for the new engine version.
