The collapse of the case has drawn in the Prime Minister and some of senior Labour government advisors with accusations over how far they went in designating China a security threat.
When it started to pit the Crown Prosecution Service against the government, Sir Keir Starmer - former director of public prosecutions himself - decided to act, saying he would publish evidence.
