In this video from the Berklee Online course Black Creative Expression: An Introduction to Africana Studies, course author and instructor Emmett G. Price III explores the role of the Griot—an essential figure in African communities. A Griot is a historian and storyteller, often a musician, who preserves and passes down tales from pre-colonial Africa through song. Traditionally, men are the Griots, coming from long family lineages of Griots and trained not only in music but in the deep understanding of African culture. Griots recount the histories of wars, deaths, achievements, hunters, warriors, and kings through ancestral memory. As Price explains, the Griot’s role extends beyond preserving the past—they also keep African culture alive in the present and for future generations.
