In jazz piano, chord extensions are notes added above the 7th of a chord. The most common chord extensions are the 9th, 11th, and 13th, which add harmonic color and tension beyond the basic chord tones.
The 1st, 3rd, 5th, and 7th are known as chord tones and define the core quality of a chord. Notes above the 7th are considered extensions and form part of a chord's extended harmony.
Jazz chord extensions are built by stacking thirds above the root, creating the sequence 1–3–5–7–9–11–13. This allows jazz musicians to create richer harmonic textures than basic triads alone.
