500,000 Americans Lost Their Jobs, So Why Did Unemployment Fall
More than half a million Americans left the labor force in a single month, yet the unemployment rate went down. It sounds impossible until you understand who the government actually counts as unemployed.
This video explores why falling unemployment can hide a weakening job market. When people become discouraged and stop actively searching for work, they are no longer counted as unemployed. That can make the headline rate improve even while hiring slows, labor-force participation falls, and hundreds of thousands of workers disappear from the statistics. Meanwhile, more Americans are relying on multiple jobs, gig work, and credit cards just to stay afloat. Younger workers face brutal hiring processes, AI screening, underemployment, and fewer traditional full-time opportunities, while employers continue replacing missing workers with automation or simply spreading more work across fewer people.
The numbers can say the labor market is getting stronger, but if fewer people are participating in it, that may be the exact opposite of what’s really happening.
