On March 15th 1783, General George Washington addressed his men at Newburgh as they were on the verge of revolt. Congress has not paid them and now the pensions they’d been promised were being thrown into doubt. Officers and their men were ready to overthrow the new American system when it had barely begun. But Washington appealed to their honour and their patriotism, urging them to trust in the fragile new political system that the Revolution had only recently created.
