When a person dies in the Warlpiri culture of Central Australia, they are given a new name for the mourning period and sometimes for years after — hence the almost unbearable pathos of Kumanjayi Little Baby, the name given to the five-year-old girl killed in Alice Springs.
That pathos is shot through with anger and incomprehension at how she died, but also at the combined failings of government at all levels to arrest the dysfunction and assuage the trauma of Indigenous Australians.
