During a recent hands-off demo of GTA 6 at Rockstar HQ, we spotted the quiet return of something that hasn’t been a major part of the series for over twenty years. But we’re not talking about big perms and leg warmers, we’re talking about body building.
Before the dizzying realism of Red Dead Redemption 2, GTA San Andreas was undoubtedly Rockstar’s most ambitious game: a deep world simulation with an array of RPG stats and character customisation options that had an impact on the gameplay and were noticed by the game’s reactive NPCs. The system was well ahead of its time, though many players bounced off it. Often on the grounds that watching your diet and going to the gym in real life isn’t fun, so it shouldn’t be a mandatory minigame in an escapist fantasy.
Well, Rockstar have decided to bring it all back for GTA 6: you can take Jason and Lucia to the gym, alone or together, to work on their lats and six-packs. And, yes, you can overeat to make them fat, which might not be great for outrunning the cops but it is very funny. Who’d have thought that one of GTA 6’s most exciting innovations would be all about lifting things and putting them back down again.
