In this video, Luke from Luke’s English Podcast and I try to build an app for English learners live, using AI.
We start by talking through some real problems English learners face: remembering vocabulary, practising pronunciation, understanding phonemic script, getting useful feedback, and knowing what to practise when you are learning on your own.
Then we choose one problem to solve: how to help English learners read, hear and transcribe words using the British English phonemic alphabet.
Using Claude, we build a simple web app live during the conversation. It creates a phonemic sound chart, lets learners hear English sounds, and gives practice activities for recognising and transcribing words in phonemic script.
The result is not perfect, and that is part of the point. AI can build something surprisingly useful very quickly, but teacher judgement is still needed to spot problems, improve the design, and make sure the tool actually helps learners.
