For a long time, Mortal Kombat’s 1995 live-action movie set the bar as far as video game-to-movie adaptations go. Not a high bar to clear, to be sure, but the bottom line is the 1995 video game adaptation understood what fans wanted: great martial arts, plenty of cheese, a respect for the source material, and a lot of Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa mean-mugging the camera and saying “Your soul is mine!”
