Did Hunza Inspire Shangri-La? K2, Nanga Parbat and a Lost Fort
Explorer David Adams crosses Pakistan's high Himalayas to test a legend: is Hunza the real Shangri-La? From Peshawar to K2, he follows the Indus in a race against winter.
Starting in Peshawar, David tracks the roots of James Hilton's 1930s novel Lost Horizon, then drives toward the giants named in the book: K2 and Nanga Parbat. At minus 20 and hemmed by crevasses, the team turns back short of a viewpoint, a reminder of how unforgiving the roof of the world can be. In the Bomboret Valley, he meets the Kalash, a non-Muslim mountain people whose desecrated graveyard tells of persecution and survival. Over tea, elders share stories and skepticism that Shangri-La is anywhere near.
South in Chitral, wild horsemen thunder through bushkazi, as early snows close the Lowry Pass and eight hours crawl by over 50 miles. In the Swat Valley, remnants of a Buddhist past lie defaced, while memories of the hippie trail collide with conservative norms and a nearby town where gunsmiths churn out weapons for old feuds.
Climbing the Karakoram Highway, David rides Pakistan's famed painted trucks and witnesses a village exorcism: a shaman, entranced by juniper smoke, digs up a skull fragment believed to be the source of a curse, then delivers a fairy prophecy sealed in goat's blood. In Gilgit he swings a mallet in a bruising first game of polo before pushing on to Skadu, where a 1970s resort and a downed plane trade on the Shangri-La myth.
The trail ends in the Hunza Valley, a place renowned for longevity and peace. There, a 15th-century fort with a distinctly Buddhist look matches Hilton's description with eerie precision. Custodian Ejaz believes the writer may have passed this way; David remains unsure. Whether or not Hilton came, this valley feels like a private Shangri-La - a haven of hope at the ends of the earth.
