Review:
The Mercedes EQS is back – and this time it might finally have what it takes to take on the EV benchmark that was the Tesla Model S.
At first glance, the design evolution is subtle. You still get that ultra-aerodynamic silhouette, but Mercedes has refined the details with a sharper front end, updated lighting, and a more confident stance. The real story, though, isn’t what you can see, it’s what you can’t.
Under the body sits a major technical overhaul. The EQS 450+ now uses a new 122kWh battery with more energy-dense cell chemistry, delivering a headline WLTP range of up to 574 miles. That makes it one of the longest-range electric cars on sale anywhere right now.
Charging has also taken a big step forward. The move to an 800V architecture allows DC charging speeds of up to 350kW, meaning in ideal conditions you could add around 200 miles of range in just 10 minutes. Even on more common 400V chargers, Mercedes has engineered a split-charging strategy to maintain strong speeds in the real world.
There’s also significantly more intelligence in the way it drives and regenerates energy. Mercedes claims the upgraded regen system can now recover up to 385kW under braking, reinforcing just how efficiency-focused this car has become.
So the question is simple: is this the update that finally allows the EQS to step out of the Model S shadow and claim the crown in electric luxury?
