In the capital Kabul, people relying on wells now have to dig as deep as 150 metres to find groundwater, leaving locals forced to buy unclean water at high prices.
The shortage is being blamed on Kabul's population doubling over the past 20 years, along with climate change bringing droughts and sudden, heavy floods.
This water isn’t being absorbed by the ground because of the rate of building and urbanisation in the city. And the country’s recent conflict has exacerbated its infrastructure problem.
