Richard Scolyer dies after fighting the 'worst of the worst brain cancers' | Australian Story
"The field owes him a great debt of gratitude."
Leading melanoma pathologist Professor Richard Scolyer has died aged 59 after a remarkable three-year fight against the 'worst of the worst brain cancers'
After being diagnosed with glioblastoma, the 2024 Australian of the Year became the first person in the world to receive a combination of three immunotherapy drugs before surgery. The treatment strategy, pioneered by his colleague Georgina Long was adapted from her work in melanoma.
It resulted in valuable data that showed how immunotherapy could be used for brain cancer – a cancer that has few advances in treatment for almost two decades.
In this 2023 Australian Story, Professor Scolyer explained why he was willing to put himself forward in order to advanced the outcomes for future brain cancer patients.
