On Friday, the MCG will host American gridiron football when the Los Angeles Rams and San Francisco 49ers play the first ever regular season National Football League game in Australia.
Since 2007, the NFL has held regular season games outside the US in countries like the UK, Brazil, Germany, Ireland and Spain. But this money-making machine doesn't come to town for free — Victoria paid for the privilege — reportedly as much as $15 million a game for each of the next three years. The Victorian Minister for Major Events Anthony Carbines hasn't confirmed the amount, but says even in cash-strapped Victoria, whatever the government paid the NFL was worth it.
