Hundreds of pages of files linked to Peter Mandelson's appointment as UK ambassador to Washington are set to be published in what one minister warned would be "very uncomfortable reading" for the government.

The documents will include private messages which Mandelson exchanged with government ministers and officials.
Police have asked for some files to be withheld because they are part of a criminal investigation into alleged misconduct in public office.
Mandelson has denied any wrongdoing.
