More than 500 years after tomato plants arrived in Europe from South America, the tomato has become one of the world’s most successful fruits. This film follows that rise through fields, kitchens, laboratories, and seed collections, asking how one fruit spread so far, adapted so widely, and became so central to taste, cultivation, and trade.
From Naples to Austria, from desert farming in Qatar to industrial production in China, the documentary tracks the tomato through radically different systems of growth and use. Along the way, growers, breeders, researchers, and seed keepers reveal what made the fruit so powerful: flavor, adaptability, and extraordinary diversity. But the film also draws a clear line between that richness and the pressure toward standardized modern varieties, making biodiversity and seed preservation part of the tomato’s story too.
