Off the coast of southern Australia, Phillip Island is surrounded by the blue waters of the Bass Strait. This protected reserve is home to a large colony of little blue penguins, which feed at sea and live year round along the sandy shores. Carefully designed wooden walkways allow visitors to observe the colony without disturbing its natural habitat.
This excerpt follows the daily work of a biologist who has monitored the penguins for decades. By weighing chicks, tracking individuals and observing molting periods, the health of the birds reveals the condition of the marine ecosystem itself.
