Buffalo are back in the American West, but their return has not ended the work of managing them. From the winter range of Yellowstone to ranch land in Wyoming and the annual roundup at Custer State Park, this film follows the people who live with buffalo as wild animals, working animals, and meat animals.
As herds move through open country, fenced ranches, auctions, and drought-strained range, the film tracks the practical decisions that now shape buffalo life in the West. It also holds onto the animal’s deeper meaning through Native voices, horses, and the memory of a species that once sustained entire peoples and was nearly destroyed in the 19th century.
