The Russian president has been called lots of things since he launched his invasion of Ukraine four and a half years ago, but Donald Trump’s special envoy had a different choice of words.
Steve Witkoff met Putin in St Petersburg, where he praised him as a “humanitarian”.
It came after Russia released 74-year-old Stephen Hubbard, an American who was captured in 2022 and accused of serving in a defence unit in eastern Ukraine. He was sentenced to almost seven years in a penal colony in 2024.
But Witkoff’s compliment for Putin quickly brought fierce backlash.
