I went to music school and the modes still didn't click. It took me years to finally understand them — and it happened when I stopped thinking of the modes as scale patterns and started hearing them as colors. In this lesson I break down all 7 guitar modes explained the way I wish someone had taught me: Ionian, Dorian, Phrygian, Lydian, Mixolydian, Aeolian, and Locrian — what each one actually sounds like, the one or two notes that give each mode its character, and how to start using modes in real music.

5:06 Lydian — the cinematic one
5:57 Mixolydian — you're already playing this
6:54 Aeolian — the saddest mode
