Feeling stuck in the pentatonic box? You're not alone — it's one of the most
common things guitar players email me about. In this lesson I break down two
things I think most players get wrong with the pentatonic scale, and how
fixing them opens up the entire fretboard.
We start with that one box shape we all learned, then work through connecting
all five pentatonic shapes up and down the neck, and finally the
one-string-at-a-time trick that forces you out of the same tired licks and
into something way more melodic. It's all played over a simple D minor groove
so you can actually hear the difference as it happens.
If you've been soloing in the same spot on the neck for years, this is the
lesson I wish someone had handed me a lot sooner.
