If you're already employed, the fastest path into AI engineering is to become the AI person on your team. Volunteer to build the AI feature nobody else wants to own. Ship one thing with AI inside your current company.
An internal transfer to an AI or AI-adjacent role is almost always easier than landing one completely from scratch. So if you can learn inside your company, even if it isn't your main role, you build real use cases and experience you can point back to later, and that makes everything easier.
