Here's the thing people massively underrate about AI engineering: system design. Knowing how to take a bunch of moving parts and turn them into something that runs reliably in production for tons of users is the single hardest skill in AI engineering, and it has pretty much nothing to do with the AI itself.
That's the good news if you're already a software engineer. If you already have that skill, you're in a really good place, and you just need to add a few things specific to the AI layer on top.
