A devastating tornado ravaged Enid, Oklahoma on April 23, with shocking videos showing the wind vortex ripping past Vance Air Force Base and leaving a trail of devastation.
Initial surveys of damage from the National Weather Service, designated the tornado as an EF4, with winds swirling at more than 166mph. But now new data from researchers at the National Severe Storms Laboratory and the University of Illinois is suggesting the tornado was stronger than once previously thought.
According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, new analysis suggests that winds from the vortex were actually spinning at more than 200mph — which would make the Enid tornado a rare EF5.
If upgraded, the Enid tornado would be only the second EF5 to swirl onto US soil in more than a decade. The Post spoke with Dr. Jana Hauser EF-5 tornadoes and what this new designation could mean.
